04:06 pm - Posted using TxtLJ
I'm in Redmond! I'm going to lack internets for a while, so LJ updates will be sparse. Just doing this to say I'm alive and everything is fine!

11:59 pm - More progress!
I'm in Montana at the moment. One more day until Washington! We should be in Redmond around 2ish.

Not much to say. But here are my notes:

"Wyoming - Gas $4.15 - Yikes!"

Half a tank ended up being $30. ;-;

"Wyoming Pizza Hut bathroom - braille on the baby changing unit."

At first I thought nothing of it, but then I realized... why would a blind person be changing a diaper?

"Kum & Go - Wyoming gas station convince store"

Do I really need to explain?

"Montana - Searching for service D:"

Eventually we found Verizon, with small bouts of roaming.

"Montana - Gas $3.93, price changed to $3.88 AFTER we got gas. -_-"

Seriously, like 5 minutes after we notice the price had changed. They had one of those fancy digital signs. -_-

"Montana - 26th Annual Testicle Festival"

Just a big WTF there. I thought I read the sign wrong, but no. Google it. It exists.

09:22 pm - More updates!
I'm in a Best Western in South Dakota, only a few miles away from Mt. Rushmoore. We already saw the mountian, it's rainy and icky outside so we didn't stay long. It also didn't help that I was really cranky from lack of food/sleep/not eating well and maybe other things. I feel better now.

Not many notes today.

"Dick's Body Shop - Suddenly it's like new! 24 Hr Toe service. 2 signs so far."

While my Mom is laughing at the fact that they used "Toe" instead of "Tow", I'm giggling at "Dick's Body Shop". >>

"State law - Move over for stopped vehicles with flashing yellow lights. - South Dakota"

The "with flashing yellow lights" portion was tacked on the sign like an afterthought. I'm wondering why so specific? Why do the lights have to be yellow? What about red or blue?

"South Dakota - No longer roaming! :D"

I was happy. After roaming through a whole state, this was a welcome change.

"South Dakota - Signs for Wall Drug EVERYWHERE. Adds started 300 miles away from it."

I think the first sign said 355 miles away. The signs were ridiculously frequent. And all it ended up being was a drug store in a little place called Wall. No, we didn't go there. And after 355 miles of what seemed 5 adds every mile, I just wanted it to go away. Seriously. Home Baked Pie - Wall Drug. Home made Ice Cream - Wall Drug. Pop 10 cents! Wall Drug. Free coffee and doughnuts for Honey Mooners! - Wall Drug. Wallcome! Wall Drug. The different adds just go on and on. They were ridiculous and annoying.

"Eat Here! (Then get gas) - Doo-Wah Diddy's Diner, South Dakota"

I know they mean gas for the car, but they probably could have worded it better. >>

"Pop only 10 cents! - Where'd the soda go? D:"

It's soda damnit. Not pop!

"Cosmos mystery area. See it. Feel it. - Attraction in South Dakota"

I saw a few signs for this that also said "Survive it!" I'm kinda intrigued as to what it actually is.

Tomorrow the goal is to be through most of Montana. Then the next day I should be at my apartment in Redmond!

10:48 pm - Update
I am now in the CST time-zone, in Blue Earth Minnesota. I am currently in a AmericInn and am using the free wireless there. (Cheap room! 2 queens, fridge and microwave, free internet, and it's probably only going to be around $70. After paying $190 a night for Otakon, for 2 queens, no internet, and having to pay extra for fridge/microwave, this is awesome!)

It took me awhile to fall asleep last night. People decided to be loud for awhile outside the room. Blah.

Had pancakes at Friendly's for Breakfast, and got some ice cream to go! Yay! Apparently the farthest west Friendly's goes is Ohio, which makes me sad.

I made LOTS of notes on my phone. So many strange things.

"Indiana Law: 'Quite zone. No engine breaks.' Huh?"

Seriously, I have no idea what that's supposed to mean.

"Wisconsin rest stop: vending machines with card swipes"

I just had to make note of this because I remember talking to my manager about how awesome it would be if vending machines took credit/debit cards. They exist!

"Pirate Cove, Adventure golf! - Wisconson attraction"

Yes, because when I think of Pirates, Golf is the first thing that comes to mind! Apparently it was a place with 5 different 18 hole mini golf courses.

"Wisconsin - I don't think I've seen so many water-parks in such a short distance."

There were TONS of them. And Wisconsin isn't even a warm state most of the time. There were quite a few indoor resorts as well.

"Illinois - Drivers sucked. Roads sucked. Million tolls, lots of construction, exits were not numbered. Whole state full of fail."

The road we took took us through Chicago, which wasn't that bad. I found it interesting that there was a train (which reminded me of a NYC subway train) in the middle of the highway. But after Chicago, we were nickel and dimed to death in around $6 worth in tolls, the exits were not numbered (all the signs would say (place) Exit (number) miles, and the actual exit was not numbered.) And when the toll road actually started, they decided to restart counting the miles to the border. Only the numbers got bigger as you got closer to the border. 46 1/2 miles. 46 1/2 from where? The middle of Illinois? Awesome.

"Noticed in Wisconsin - Highways are lettered. Nothing is named"

Occasionally highways are named. I found it interesting that there were so few that they could just get away with lettering them.

"Exit 41 Wisconsin - blank food and lodging signs."

I should have taken this as a sign for what was to come...

"Minnesota - Bumpiest. Highway. Ever."

Seriously. I thought something was wrong with the car. Like, we were missing a tire or something.

"General Note: Some states actually post what the minimum speed limit is on the highway."

I had never seen this before.

"Minnesota - Counties are numbered"

Upon entering the state I saw county 101. Dear lord.

"Minnesota - So empty and full of nothing that even junctions are mentioned on road signs with towns."

Towns that were over 100 miles away were showing up on signs. No joke.

"Blue Valley Sod: We sell quality seen and grass - Minnesota sign"

When I saw "we sell quality seed and grass" my mind instantaneously went to weed. Awesome. >_<

In Minnesota all there was was farms. So many farms. So much nothing. Rt 90 ended up being under construction for 16 miles. The ended up re-directing us to the east side of 90, so it was a one lane highway each way for the duration of the construction. There were polls in the middle of the lane with periodic "No Passing" signs. The one exit that was caught in the construction was completely destroyed. Holy crap. Many of the exits had no lodging, but food and gas. It was a nightmare.

That's pretty much it. Tomorrow we aim at getting to Mt. Rushmoore.

And this is aimed at someone specific: I'd love to talk, but my mom is already asleep, and I'm currently roaming in the middle of nowhere. D: I saw the call, and I wanted to pick up, I really did. ;-;

07:31 pm - Progress!
I'm currently in a Comfort Inn in Maumee, Ohio. I'm chilling on the internets, because there's free internet in the room! Yay!

This room was only $100, but we get a fridge, microwave, and free internets! So awesome!

Anyway, my new phone lets me take notes. I think I can remember what my notes were:

"Welcome to Jersey Shore, PA!"

I'm dead serious. In the middle of Pennsylvania, there's a place called Jersey Shore. I tried to snap a picture of it, but the few signs I saw just went by too fast.

"Weird bathroom in Ohio Pizza Hut. Two toilets, no stalls."

Seriously. Why the hell bother putting up the 2nd toilet if you can't put a stall around them?

That's pretty much it. There was a bit of an adventure with going nuts over where my Debit card went, since we're using my money to fund the trip. It was in the car, in the pocket on the door, but I didn't see it the 5 times I looked in there, because it was right up against the side. Didn't find it until we pulled over into a rest area and I put my hand in the pocket. ~_~

12:06 pm - Packing...
I'm leaving for WA tomorrow! Ack!

I can't help but find it a bit amusing that all the cardboard boxes that I have to pack stuff in are all Wii boxes. I got them several months ago while at GameStop. I think we had a ton of them around the holidays, and one of my co-workers mentioned I should take them while we still had them in bulk.

10:34 pm - Back!
Back from Otakon!

Don't really have any costume pictures to show yet (I actually have some of myself this year! *gasp*) but I have a picture of something I got from the dealer's room. And I took the pic with my shiny new phone!

phat lewts )

And I have to say, I got quite a few compliments on my costume, and this was the first year that I was actually happy with how my costume looked on me!

12:30 am - Off to Otakon!
I'm a huge procrastinator and I still haven't finished my costume. @_@

I'm doing some sewing in the car ride down there, yay!

There's a good chance you won't hear from me until the 10th, I'm bringing my laptop with me for picture purposes, but if the hotel doesn't have free internet, then no nets for me this weekend.

Later!

06:07 pm - Sketch
I dunno why, but for some reason I wanted to find a notebook I used for my animation class, and show a sketch I did in there.

It's of a draenei (I guess you could say it's kinda based off Ix), and I really didn't have much of a refrence for her. I found a picture of a Draenei to help me with her pose, but other than that? Nothing really.

It's a bit big, I scanned it in at 300dpi, so it's quite a bit bigger than the actual sketch.

09:30 am - u werk fer GameStop?
It's funny that only now, after being part of the Sony Retail Loyalty Site for over a year, they actually ask for some sort of proof (aka - copy of a paystub) that I work for GameStop.

Even though the email they sent me said they choose people for this randomly, the email conveniently comes after I've ordered over $100 in stuff.

Yeah, random my ass.

06:48 pm - Defragmenting...
I'm seriously hoping defragmenting my PC isn't going to screw it over. Seeing it tell me that it's moving some of my anime and WoW files worries me...

11:42 pm - Time is ticking away...
I'm so taking advantage of Sony's retail site right now. About a week before I stop working for GameStop. *.*

I've already gotten Jeanne D' Arc, LocoRoco, Patapon, a new PS2 controller, and a PS3 memory card adaptor from them. Granted, the stuff won't get to my house until I'm gone, but... free stuff!

To put things into perspective... I got over $100 worth of stuff for free.

There's one or two more things left, which should be easy to work up enough points for.

Soooo... a bout a week until Otakon. Great. And I'm leaving for WA the 11th most likely.

...

It's going so fast. Holy crap.

Someone's going to move into our house. A woman from church. She's going to live in the extra bedroom that's not used anymore. She's going to pay rent too, which will help my mom out a bit.

12:54 pm - Classic controller banned?
Apparently Nintendo lost a lawsuit, and if they want to continue making the classic controller, they may have to cough up royalties. The lawsuit also applies to GC controllers, but luckily for Nintendo those aren't made anymore

MSN article
Article linked in MSN article.

Even though the "patent infringement" or whatever applies to the GC controllers, which came out in 2001, they decide to make a stink about it when they have a successful system and is the hottest thing since sliced bread.

Awesome.

10:56 am - Vista memory situation?
I'm trying to help out a friend with a memory situation on her laptop. She has a 60gb HD, and only about 10gb of music, and yet the computer is telling her she only has 500something mb of space left.

Does anyone know how much space a Vista install takes up? Apparently my Googlefu is weak.

11:20 pm - *regrowth*
I just witnessed the oddest thing in SW...

There was a "dead" hunter outside of Stormwind Keep, right near the entrance of Old Town. Now, I say "dead" because his pet was still out and it said he was ressurectable. So, he had just Feigned death. Anyway, there's a druid constantly casting Regrowth on the hunter, and of course it's doing absolutely nothing. The hunter logs off and his body and pet fade away, and the Druid does /cry.

P.S. - this was a lvl 70 druid doing this.

.__.;

02:59 pm - Bwahahaha
I found a teacher on Facebook, I never actually had any classes with him, but he's the supervisor for the Game Development club, and he's really interested in keeping touch and hearing about what I'm doing at DigiPen.

I found this in his quotes section:

I actually fascinated that people are offended by something in a game. I don’t suggest ever moving to New Jersey.
